About Prayer Times in Penang

Penang (officially Pulau Pinang) is a Malaysian state consisting of Penang Island and a strip of the mainland, with a total population of approximately 1.8 million. While Penang is uniquely known in Malaysia as a state with a Chinese-majority population (approximately 40%), its Muslim community — mostly Malay, approximately 43% of the population — is a vital and historically rooted part of the state's identity. George Town, Penang's capital, has a UNESCO-listed heritage core where historic Chinese temples, Hindu temples, mosques, and churches coexist in close proximity.

Penang's prayer times are published by JAKIM (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia), using Malaysia's national standard with Fajr at 20° solar depression. At 5.4°N, Penang is close to the equator, giving it among the most stable prayer schedules in Malaysia — Fajr falls between approximately 5:50 and 6:15 AM throughout the year, and Maghrib between 7:15 and 7:40 PM. Prayer time stability is one of the notable differences between Penang and higher-latitude cities where seasonal variation presents scheduling challenges.

The Masjid Melayu Lebuh Aceh (Acheen Street Mosque) in George Town, built around 1808 by a wealthy Arab merchant, is one of the oldest mosques in Penang and a heritage site reflecting the city's Arab and Acehnese Muslim trading communities. The Masjid Negeri Pulau Pinang (State Mosque) in Air Itam is the largest mosque in the state, with a capacity of 5,000. Penang's Muslim community celebrates Ramadan with the famous Ramadan bazaars at Jalan Masjid Melayu and other locations, where Malay traditional foods attract visitors from across Malaysia and beyond.
