About Prayer Times in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia, a country where Islam is the official religion and approximately 63% of the population — some 20 million people — are Muslim. The city itself reflects this identity in its architecture, daily rhythms, and civic life: the Adhan is broadcast from mosques across the city five times daily, and Islamic public holidays shape the national calendar. Malaysia's Muslim community is predominantly Sunni of the Shafi'i school.

Prayer times in Kuala Lumpur are officially calculated and published by JAKIM (Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia — the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia). JAKIM uses an astronimcally verified method that sets Fajr at 20° solar depression and Isha at 18°. Because Kuala Lumpur sits just 3° north of the equator, prayer times remain relatively stable throughout the year — Fajr consistently falls between 5:40 and 6:10 AM, and Isha between 7:30 and 8:10 PM, making daily scheduling straightforward compared to higher-latitude cities.

The Masjid Negara (National Mosque), completed in 1965, is Kuala Lumpur's most prominent Islamic landmark, capable of accommodating 15,000 worshippers and featuring Malaysia's iconic star-shaped roof. The Masjid Jamek, built in 1909 at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers, is the oldest surviving mosque in the city. During Ramadan, the area around Masjid India and Chow Kit transforms into a vibrant bazaar where tens of thousands gather to break fast at Maghrib each evening.
