About Prayer Times in Surabaya

Surabaya is Indonesia's second-largest city, with a metropolitan population of approximately 9 million. Located on the northeastern coast of Java, it is the capital of East Java province — one of the most densely Muslim regions of Indonesia. Surabaya holds particular significance in Indonesian Islamic history: the city and the broader East Java region are the heartland of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), founded in 1926 and today the world's largest Islamic organisation by membership, with over 90 million followers. NU's moderate, traditional approach to Sunni Islam — emphasising local customs, Sufi practice, and scholarly consensus — shapes Islamic life throughout the city.

Surabaya follows Indonesia's national prayer time standard, issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs using Fajr at 20° and Isha at 18° solar depression. At 7.3°S latitude, Surabaya's prayer times are very stable — Fajr falls between approximately 4:05 and 4:30 AM throughout the year, and Maghrib between 5:25 and 6:00 PM. The equatorial stability of prayer times here makes Surabaya's daily religious schedule one of the most predictable of any major Muslim city.

The Masjid Agung Al-Akbar ("The Great Grand Mosque"), completed in 2000, is one of Indonesia's largest mosques, with a capacity of 60,000 worshippers and a distinctive green dome. The historic Ampel Mosque in the old Arab quarter of Surabaya, associated with the Wali Songo (the nine saints credited with spreading Islam in Java), is one of the holiest sites in Indonesian Islam — the grave of Sunan Ampel within the complex draws pilgrims from across the archipelago. Surabaya's Islamic identity is also expressed through hundreds of neighbourhood mosques (masjid) and prayer halls (musholla) that serve the city's dense urban community.
