Bandung, the capital of West Java province in Indonesia, is the country's third-largest city with a metropolitan population of approximately 8 million. Known as the "Paris of Java" for its colonial-era architecture and cooler highland climate, Bandung is also a significant Islamic city — West Java (the Sundanese region) has one of the strongest Islamic identities in Indonesia, and Bandung serves as a centre for Islamic education, fashion, and commerce. Bandung follows Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs prayer time standard (Fajr at 20°, Isha at 18°). At 6.9°S, prayer times are exceptionally stable — Fajr falls between approximately 4:35 and 5:05 AM throughout the year, and Maghrib between 5:45 and 6:15 PM. Bandung's altitude of approximately 768 metres does not affect the astronomical calculation but makes the pre-dawn Fajr prayer considerably cooler than in coastal cities like Jakarta or Surabaya.

The Masjid Raya Bandung (Grand Mosque of Bandung), rebuilt and expanded to its current magnificent form in 2003, overlooks the city's Alun-Alun (main square) and is the symbolic heart of Islamic life in the city. The Masjid Al-Lathiif, famous for housing large post-Isya religious gatherings and being livestreamed to a national online audience, is one of Indonesia's most digitally connected mosques.
