About Prayer Times in Jakarta

Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia — the country with the world's largest Muslim population, with over 230 million Muslims. The city itself has a Muslim population of more than ten million, making it one of the largest Muslim-majority metropolitan areas on earth. Indonesian Islam, shaped by centuries of trade, scholarship, and indigenous culture, is predominantly Sunni and characterised by the influential organisations Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, both of which maintain significant institutional presence in Jakarta.

Prayer times in Jakarta are issued by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kementerian Agama), which publishes national timetables based on an astronomical method using Fajr at 20° and Isha at 18° solar depression. Jakarta's position just 6° south of the equator means prayer times are exceptionally stable year-round — Fajr stays near 4:35 AM and Maghrib near 5:55 PM throughout the year, varying by only a few minutes between seasons.

The Masjid Istiqlal ("Independence Mosque"), completed in 1978 and the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, dominates central Jakarta and can hold over 120,000 worshippers in its full complex. Its minarets broadcast the Adhan across the city centre, and Friday Jumu'ah prayers fill its vast interior and spill onto the surrounding plaza. During Ramadan, Istiqlal hosts the national Tarawih prayer broadcast live on Indonesian television. Jakarta's mosques also play a central role in the national tradition of takbiran — the communal chanting of Allahu Akbar on the eve of Eid al-Fitr.
