About Prayer Times in São Paulo

São Paulo, Brazil's megacity of 22 million and South America's largest metropolis, is home to one of the Western Hemisphere's oldest Arab Muslim communities. Brazilian Muslims number approximately 1.5 million nationwide — the third-largest Muslim population in the Americas after the United States and Canada — concentrated primarily in São Paulo state. The community is predominantly of Lebanese and Syrian origin, descendants of immigrants who arrived from the late 19th century onward, initially as traders in the Ottoman-era mascate (travelling merchant) tradition.

Brazilian mosques use the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°). At 23.6°S in the Southern Hemisphere, São Paulo's seasons are reversed — long summer days occur in December and January, when Fajr can begin before 4:30 AM and Isha can extend past 9:00 PM. In June (winter), Fajr falls around 5:45 AM and Maghrib near 5:30 PM. The Federation of Muslim Associations of Brazil (FAMBRAS) coordinates Islamic affairs nationally and publishes prayer timetables, Ramadan guides, and moon-sighting decisions for Brazil's Muslim community.

The Mesquita Brasil in the Cambuci neighbourhood of São Paulo, inaugurated in 1960, is the oldest purpose-built mosque in Latin America and a landmark of Brazilian-Arab heritage — its Moorish-style facade is a historic monument. The Mesquita Jihad and the Centro Islâmico de São Paulo in the Brás neighbourhood — the historic heart of Arab immigrant commercial life — also serve the city's Muslim community. São Paulo's Liberdade and Brás districts contain Arabic restaurants, halal butchers, and Islamic bookshops that reflect over a century of Arab-Muslim presence in Brazil's most cosmopolitan city.
