About Prayer Times in Detroit
Detroit and its suburb Dearborn form the heart of the largest Arab-American Muslim community in the United States. The greater Detroit metropolitan area is home to an estimated 200,000–300,000 Muslims — with Dearborn alone, a city of 100,000, having a Muslim population exceeding 40%, the highest proportion of any US city. Arab immigrants, primarily from Lebanon, Yemen, and Iraq, began settling in the Detroit area in the early 20th century to work in the Ford Motor Company's factories. Today, Dearborn's East and West Ends have an unmistakably Arabic-Muslim character — Arabic shop signs, halal restaurants, and mosques define the streetscape.
Detroit-area mosques follow the ISNA calculation (Fajr and Isha at 15°). At 42.3°N, prayer times vary noticeably — Fajr ranges from approximately 3:50 AM in June to 6:15 AM in December, and Isha from 10:15 PM (summer) to 5:40 PM (winter). The Islamic House of Wisdom and the American Muslim Society are among the organisations that publish unified prayer timetables for the regional community.
The Islamic Center of America in Dearborn, completed in 2005, is the largest mosque in the United States by floor area, with a capacity of 3,000 worshippers inside and space for thousands more on surrounding grounds. It serves the Shia Muslim community, which is predominant among Dearborn's Lebanese and Iraqi Americans. The historic American Moslem Society mosque (1938), the Islamic House of Wisdom, and the Muslim Unity Center in Bloomfield Hills serve the Sunni and other Muslim communities across the metro area. During Ramadan, Dearborn's Michigan Avenue transforms into one of America's most vibrant late-night Iftar scenes, with food stalls and community gatherings that continue past midnight.
