Chicago, the American Midwest's largest city, has a Muslim population of approximately 400,000 — around 14% of the city's 2.7 million residents — making it one of the most significant Muslim communities in the United States. Chicago holds a particularly important place in African-American Islamic history: it was here that the Nation of Islam was established in the 1930s under Elijah Muhammad, and where Malcolm X rose to national prominence. After Elijah Muhammad's son, Warith Deen Mohammed, transitioned the organisation toward mainstream Sunni Islam in 1975, Chicago became a pivotal city for African-American Sunni Muslim life.
