About Prayer Times in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is home to one of the largest and most diverse Muslim communities in the United States, estimated at 500,000 or more in the greater metropolitan area — roughly 4–5% of the population of 13 million. The community reflects the city's extraordinary ethnic diversity: Iranian-Americans form one of the largest Muslim groups (concentrated in West Los Angeles and "Tehrangeles"), alongside significant Arab-American, Pakistani, Afghan, Somali, Indonesian, and African-American Muslim communities. Los Angeles also has a significant convert Muslim population connected to hip-hop culture and social justice movements.
Los Angeles mosques predominantly follow the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) calculation (Fajr and Isha at 15° solar depression). At 34°N, LA's prayer times vary moderately — Fajr ranges from approximately 4:05 AM in June to 6:00 AM in December, and Isha from 9:20 PM (summer) to 5:40 PM (winter). The Islamic Shura Council of Southern California coordinates among the region's many mosques and publishes unified prayer timetables and moon-sighting decisions for Ramadan.
The King Fahad Mosque in Culver City, completed in 1998 with Saudi funding, is the largest mosque in the western United States, with twin minarets and a capacity of 2,000 worshippers. The Islamic Center of Southern California (ICSC) in Koreatown, established in 1952, is one of America's oldest Islamic institutions and a pioneering centre for progressive American Muslim thought. The Islamic Center of Hawthorne and dozens of community mosques serve LA's sprawling Muslim neighbourhoods. Every year, tens of thousands of Southern California Muslims gather for Eid prayers at LA Convention Center grounds, Rose Bowl, or similar large venues — among the largest Muslim gatherings west of the Mississippi.
