About Prayer Times in New York
New York City is home to an estimated 800,000 to one million Muslims — one of the largest Muslim communities in any North American city. The community is strikingly diverse, with significant populations from South Asia, West Africa, the Arab world, and Southeast Asia, as well as a long-established African-American Muslim community rooted in movements such as the Nation of Islam and later mainstream Sunni Islam. Queens and Brooklyn have particularly dense concentrations of Muslim residents, mosques, and halal businesses.
Most mosques in New York follow the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) calculation, which places Fajr and Isha at 15° solar depression — a widely accepted standard across the United States and Canada. At New York's latitude of 40.7°N, prayer times shift noticeably through the year: Fajr can be as early as 3:50 AM in summer and as late as 6:20 AM in winter, while Isha ranges from about 8:30 PM to 5:50 PM.
The Islamic Cultural Center of New York on 96th Street in Manhattan — with its striking copper dome — is one of the city's most prominent mosques and draws worshippers from across the five boroughs. The Masjid Malcolm Shabazz in Harlem honours the legacy of Malcolm X and remains a centre of African-American Islamic life. Every year, the New York Muslim community organises one of the largest Eid prayers in the Americas, with tens of thousands gathering in parks and open spaces across the city.
