About Prayer Times in Bandar Seri Begawan
Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital of Brunei Darussalam — a small but wealthy sultanate on the island of Borneo — and home to approximately 250,000 people in the greater capital area. Brunei's official state philosophy is Melayu Islam Beraja (Malay Islamic Monarchy), which places Islam at the centre of national identity and governance. Approximately 67% of Brunei's population is Muslim, and the country operates under a dual legal system that applies Islamic sharia law to Muslims alongside civil law — making it the only country in Southeast Asia with such a system at the national level.
Brunei's prayer times are published by the Islamic Religious Council of Brunei Darussalam (MUIB) using the MABIMS (Majlis Agama Islam Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapura) method — Fajr at 20° and Isha at 18° solar depression. At 4.9°N, the capital is close to the equator, giving it extremely stable prayer times year-round — Fajr falls between approximately 5:20 and 5:40 AM throughout the year, and Maghrib between 6:10 and 6:30 PM, with barely 20 minutes of total seasonal variation. Government offices and many businesses observe prayer breaks throughout the working day.
The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, completed in 1958 and named after Brunei's 28th Sultan, is one of the most beautiful mosques in Asia and a defining landmark of Bandar Seri Begawan. Built on an artificial lagoon, its gold dome and Italian marble exterior have made it an internationally recognised symbol of Brunei's Islamic identity. The Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, completed in 1994 to celebrate the current Sultan's 25th year of reign, is the largest mosque in Brunei with a capacity of 5,000 and 29 golden domes. Brunei's Royal Regalia Museum preserves Islamic ceremonial objects used by the sultanate for centuries.
