About Prayer Times in Tehran

Tehran is the capital of Iran and one of the largest cities in the Middle East, with a metropolitan population of over 15 million. Iran is a predominantly Shia Muslim country, and Tehran reflects this identity in its religious institutions, cultural life, and public architecture. The Islamic Republic of Iran, established in 1979, formally integrates Islamic law into governance, and prayer times hold official civic status — broadcast on national television and marking the transition of the working day.

Iran uses the Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran method for prayer time calculation — a precise astronomical standard that accounts for Shia jurisprudence. Isha begins when the eastern sky has fully darkened (approximately 14° solar depression by some rulings), and Fajr follows the Shia calculation which considers true dawn (Fajr Sadiq) carefully. At Tehran's latitude of 35.7°N, seasonal variation is notable: Fajr can be as early as 3:20 AM in June and as late as 6:25 AM in December, while Maghrib ranges from about 4:25 PM to 8:20 PM.

The Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque in central Tehran and the Mosalla of Tehran (an enormous prayer complex still under construction since the 1980s) are focal points of the city's Islamic life. The Shah Mosque (now called the Imam Mosque) in the historic Tehran Bazaar area, and the Golestan Mosque, are important historical sites. Tehran is also home to the University of Religions and Denominations, which conducts comparative Islamic studies. During Muharram and Ramadan, the city erupts in large communal religious observances that define Tehran's spiritual calendar.
