About Prayer Times in Medina
Medina (al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, "the Radiant City") is the second holiest city in Islam. It is the city to which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated from Mecca in 622 CE, an event that marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar (Hijri year 1). The city is home to the Masjid al-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque), built on the site of the Prophet's own house and mosque, and one of the largest mosques in the world after numerous expansions by Saudi authorities.
Like the rest of Saudi Arabia, Medina uses the Umm al-Qura calculation method. Its latitude of approximately 24.5°N means prayer times shift gradually but predictably through the year — Fajr ranges from roughly 4:45 AM in summer to 5:45 AM in winter. The Masjid al-Nabawi maintains dedicated muezzins whose Adhan has been recorded and broadcast worldwide, and the mosque stays open twenty-four hours a day to accommodate visitors from every time zone.
Pilgrims visiting Medina often aim to pray forty consecutive prayers (Arba'een) in the Prophet's Mosque — a practice rooted in hadith tradition. Beyond the Prophet's Mosque, the city also contains the Masjid al-Quba, the first mosque ever built in Islam, as well as the Masjid al-Qiblatayn, where the direction of prayer was changed from Jerusalem to Mecca during the Prophet's lifetime. Medina is accessible only to Muslims, making every prayer offered here a deeply personal act of devotion.
