About Prayer Times in Alexandria

Alexandria, Egypt's second-largest city, sits on the Mediterranean coast and has been a crossroads of civilisations for over two millennia. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE, it became an Islamic city when Arab armies under 'Amr ibn al-'As conquered it in 641 CE. Today, Alexandria's population of roughly 5.5 million is overwhelmingly Muslim, and the city's waterfront corniche is dotted with mosques whose minarets rise above the Mediterranean skyline.

Like the rest of Egypt, Alexandria uses the Egyptian General Authority of Survey (EGAS) calculation method, placing Fajr at 19.5° and Isha at 17.5° solar depression. At 31.2°N latitude, Alexandria experiences more pronounced seasonal variation than Cairo: Fajr can begin as early as 3:30 AM in June and as late as 6:15 AM in December, while Maghrib ranges from roughly 5:05 PM to 7:50 PM. The city's coastal position means the prayer schedule closely tracks the Mediterranean sun.

The Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque in the Anfoushi neighbourhood — built over the tomb of the 13th-century Andalusian Sufi saint Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi — is Alexandria's most celebrated Islamic landmark, known for its ornate four-domed structure facing the Eastern Harbour. The historic al-Qaed Ibrahim Mosque on the corniche is another prominent city landmark. Alexandria's Islamic heritage coexists with its cosmopolitan Mediterranean identity, and its scholarly tradition stretches from the medieval Arab geographers who charted the city to the modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, which preserves Islamic manuscripts alongside ancient texts.
