About Prayer Times in Sana'a

Sana'a is the capital of Yemen and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a UNESCO-listed old city that contains some of the finest examples of pre-Islamic and early Islamic architecture in the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen has a population of approximately 32 million, the vast majority of whom are Muslim — divided between Sunni (predominantly Shafi'i school) in the south and east, and Zaydi Shia in the north and northwest, where Sana'a is located.

Yemen's prayer times are calculated by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Guidance. The Sunni communities follow the Muslim World League or Egyptian method, while Zaydi communities use their own jurisprudential calculations for Fajr and Isha timing. At 15.4°N, Sana'a's equatorial proximity gives it relatively stable prayer times — Fajr falls between approximately 4:40 and 5:25 AM across the year, and Maghrib between 5:50 and 6:35 PM. Sana'a's elevation of 2,300 metres above sea level does not affect the astronomical calculation but gives the city a cooler climate unusual for the Arabian Peninsula.

The Great Mosque of Sana'a (al-Jami' al-Kabeer), believed to date to the era of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself — according to Yemeni tradition, built in 6 CE during his lifetime — is one of the oldest mosques in Islam. The old city of Sana'a contains over 100 mosques, many with distinctive Yemeni-style minarets rising above the extraordinary multi-storey tower houses (mafraj). The Talha Mosque and numerous neighbourhood mosques serve the old city's residents, whose daily life and prayer rhythms have changed little despite the country's devastating ongoing conflict.
