About Prayer Times in Riyadh

Riyadh is the capital and largest city of Saudi Arabia, with a population exceeding seven million. As the seat of the Saudi government and the royal family, Riyadh is also the administrative centre of the Kingdom's Islamic institutions — including the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, which oversees the country's approximately 98,000 mosques and coordinates the national prayer schedule. The city is a major hub for Islamic scholarship, with institutions such as Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University training scholars who work across the Muslim world.

Riyadh uses the Umm al-Qura calculation method, the official standard across Saudi Arabia. At 24.7°N latitude, the city experiences moderate seasonal prayer- time variation — Fajr ranges from roughly 4:00 AM in summer to 5:50 AM in winter, and Maghrib from 6:10 PM (summer) to 5:20 PM (winter). All government offices, shopping malls, and public venues close during prayer times in Riyadh, and the religious police (Hay'a, now significantly reduced in authority) historically enforced this. While enforcement has loosened in recent years, prayer-time observance remains deeply embedded in the city's rhythm.

The King Khalid Grand Mosque, completed in 1992, is Riyadh's largest mosque and can accommodate 17,000 worshippers. The Imam Turki ibn Abdullah Grand Mosque in central Riyadh is another significant landmark. Riyadh is home to the King Fahd Quran Printing Complex (located in Medina but administered from the capital), which distributes millions of Quran copies worldwide annually — a reflection of the city's central role in global Islamic outreach.
