About Prayer Times in Nairobi
Nairobi, Kenya's capital and largest city, has a Muslim population of approximately 1 million — around 11% of the city's 9 million residents. Kenya's Muslim community is predominantly Sunni, with a strong Swahili cultural identity especially on the coast; Nairobi's Muslim population includes Somali, Arab, South Asian, and indigenous Kenyan communities. Islam has been present in East Africa for over a thousand years, arriving through Indian Ocean trade networks, and several Nairobi neighbourhoods — particularly Eastleigh, known as "Little Mogadishu" — have vibrant Islamic community institutions.
Prayer times in Nairobi are calculated using the Muslim World League method (Fajr and Isha at 18° solar depression), widely used across sub-Saharan Africa. Nairobi's position just 1.3°S of the equator means prayer times are remarkably stable throughout the year — Fajr consistently falls between 5:20 and 5:35 AM, and Maghrib between 6:25 and 6:40 PM, varying by less than twenty minutes across all twelve months. This equatorial consistency is unusual and makes daily scheduling for Nairobi's Muslims exceptionally predictable.
The Jamia Mosque on Banda Street in central Nairobi, built in 1902 and rebuilt in the 1920s in a Mughal-influenced style, is the city's oldest and most prominent mosque and a heritage landmark. The Eastleigh Central Mosque serves the large Somali community in that neighbourhood. The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) coordinates Islamic affairs nationally, including prayer time announcements and Ramadan moon-sighting decisions. Nairobi's Eid celebrations, particularly in Eastleigh, are among the most vivid in East Africa, with street parties, elaborate clothing, and community feasts that last through the day.
