About Prayer Times in Mogadishu

Mogadishu is the capital of Somalia, a country that is almost entirely Muslim (estimated at 99.9%) and follows the Sunni Shafi'i school. Somalia has one of the most homogeneous Muslim identities of any nation in the world, with Islam deeply embedded in Somali culture, law (xeer customary law blends with Islamic jurisprudence), language (the Somali language is rich with Arabic loanwords rooted in Islamic learning), and daily practice. The Adhan and daily prayers are woven into the fabric of Somali life from early childhood.

Somalia's prayer times use the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°). At 2°N, Mogadishu is one of the most equatorial capital cities in the Muslim world, giving it among the most stable prayer schedules imaginable — Fajr falls between approximately 4:45 and 5:00 AM throughout the entire year, and Maghrib between 6:00 and 6:15 PM. This remarkable consistency means Somali Muslims require almost no seasonal adjustment to their daily prayer routine.

The Fakr ad-Din Mosque, built in 1269 CE and one of the oldest surviving structures in Mogadishu, is a testament to the city's long Islamic history — Mogadishu was already a thriving Muslim trading city when the famous 14th-century traveller Ibn Battuta visited and described it as among the greatest cities he had seen. Despite decades of conflict that have severely damaged Mogadishu's urban fabric, the city's mosques have been central to the community's resilience. The Islamic University of Mogadishu and several major mosques rebuilt in recent years are part of the city's gradual recovery.
