About Prayer Times in Lagos
Lagos is Nigeria's commercial capital and the largest city in Africa, with a metropolitan population estimated between 15 and 24 million. Nigeria's Muslim population — concentrated in the north but with large communities in Lagos — is estimated at approximately 95 million, making it the largest Muslim population in Africa and one of the largest in the world. Lagos itself is religiously mixed, with Muslims and Christians in roughly equal proportions, though the Muslim population is substantial and growing.
Nigeria's Muslim communities typically use the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°) or the Diyanet method in some communities influenced by Turkish Islamic outreach. Lagos's latitude of 6.5°N places it close to the equator, giving it remarkably stable prayer times year-round — Fajr falls between approximately 5:20 and 5:45 AM throughout the year, and Maghrib between 6:40 and 7:05 PM, with a total variation of less than 30 minutes across all seasons.
The National Mosque of Lagos in Ebute Metta and the Central Mosque in Lagos Island are among the city's most prominent Islamic institutions, serving Friday congregations of tens of thousands. Lagos is also the headquarters of several major Nigerian Islamic organisations, including the Muslim Students' Society of Nigeria (MSSN) and branches of the Tijaniyya and Qadiriyya Sufi orders. During Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, open-air Eid prayers are held in grounds across the city, drawing enormous and colourful crowds.
