About Prayer Times in Khartoum
Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, sits at the confluence of the Blue Nile and White Nile rivers — a location that has shaped the city's history as a meeting point of trade routes and cultures for centuries. Sudan is a predominantly Sunni Muslim country (approximately 97% Muslim), with an Islamic identity that blends Arab, Nubian, and sub-Saharan African traditions. Islam arrived in Nubia gradually from the 7th century onward, and Sufi orders have historically played a particularly prominent role in Sudanese Islamic practice.
Sudan's prayer times are administered by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Endowments, using the Umm al-Qura method. At 15.5°N, Khartoum is relatively close to the equator, giving it moderate but still meaningful seasonal variation — Fajr ranges from approximately 4:40 AM in summer to 5:30 AM in winter, and Maghrib from 6:10 PM to 5:35 PM. The city's prayer times are relatively stable compared to North African capitals further north.
The Khartoum North Mosque (al-Kabeer Mosque) is the city's main congregational mosque, hosting large Friday and Eid prayers. Sudan is particularly known for the vitality of its Sufi orders (Tariqa) — the Qadiriyya, Tijaniyya, and Khatmiyya are among the most widespread — and their weekly dhikr (remembrance) gatherings at shrines around Khartoum and Omdurman draw large crowds. The tomb of the Sufi sheikh Hamad al-Nil in Omdurman (across the White Nile from Khartoum) hosts one of Africa's most vibrant weekly Sufi ceremonies on Friday afternoons.
