Kano is northern Nigeria's largest city, with a population of approximately 4.5 million. It is one of the oldest and most important cities of Islamic civilisation in West Africa, with a documented Muslim community dating to the 14th century and a history as a major terminus of trans-Saharan trade routes. Kano is approximately 99% Muslim, predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school, and is governed under sharia law — one of twelve northern Nigerian states that adopted sharia personal and criminal law in 2000.

Kano's Muslim community follows the Muslim World League method for prayer times (Fajr at 18°). At 12°N, Kano is further from the equator than Lagos but still maintains relatively stable prayer times — Fajr ranges from around 5:05 AM in summer to 6:00 AM in winter, and Maghrib between 6:35 PM and 6:45 PM. The prayer schedule is announced from the city's many mosques, and Friday Jumu'ah in Kano draws enormous congregations that fill the historic central mosque and overflow into surrounding streets.

The Emir's Palace Mosque and the Central Mosque of Kano are at the heart of the city's Islamic life. The historic walled city (Birni) contains mosques dating to the Hausa sultanate period. Kano is also home to the influential Tijaniyya Sufi order in Nigeria and the Izala Society (Salafi reformist movement), making it a city where different strands of West African Sunni Islam coexist and debate. During Ramadan, Kano's streets transform — open-air Iftar gatherings and intensive Quran recitation sessions fill the city's Islamic schools and neighbourhood mosques throughout the holy month.
