About Prayer Times in Jerusalem

Jerusalem (al-Quds) is one of the most sacred cities in Islam, the third holiest site after Mecca and Medina. The Masjid al-Aqsa compound (the Noble Sanctuary / al-Haram al-Sharif), situated on the Temple Mount, encompasses Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock — built over the site from which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is believed to have ascended to the heavens during the Night Journey (Isra' wa Mi'raj). Jerusalem's Muslim population numbers around 350,000, forming approximately 36% of the city's residents.

Prayer times in Jerusalem are issued by the Islamic Waqf of Jerusalem, the Jordanian-administered religious authority that oversees the Haram al-Sharif compound. The method used aligns with the Egyptian EGAS standard. At 31.8°N, Jerusalem's prayer schedule varies significantly across the year — Fajr ranges from around 3:30 AM in June to 5:55 AM in December, and Isha from 9:00 PM to 6:40 PM. The Adhan from Al-Aqsa's minarets — broadcast over loudspeakers across the Old City — is one of the most recognisable sounds in Islam.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque, in its current form dating largely from the Umayyad period (8th century CE), can hold up to 5,000 worshippers and is the focal point of Friday prayers for Palestinian Muslims in Jerusalem and the West Bank. The Dome of the Rock, with its iconic golden dome, is one of the earliest surviving examples of Islamic architecture. Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa carry profound political and spiritual significance — attendance often numbers in the tens of thousands, particularly during Ramadan, when Muslims from across Palestine and the broader Arab world seek to pray at the third holiest site in Islam.
