About Prayer Times in Istanbul
Istanbul straddles two continents and carries more than a millennium of Islamic history. Conquered by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II in 1453, the city became the capital of the Ottoman Caliphate and the political heart of Sunni Islam for nearly five centuries. Today, Istanbul's population of 15 million is overwhelmingly Muslim, and the call to prayer echoes simultaneously from hundreds of minarets across the Bosphorus every day.
Turkey's prayer times are calculated and published by the Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı (Directorate of Religious Affairs), using an astronomically precise method that sets Fajr at 18° solar depression and Isha at 17°. Because Istanbul sits at roughly 41°N latitude, prayer times shift considerably between seasons — Isha can fall as early as 6:30 PM in winter and as late as 10:30 PM in midsummer. The Diyanet broadcasts the Adhan nationally and coordinates the synchronised call to prayer across all of Turkey's 80,000+ mosques.
Istanbul's iconic Sultan Ahmed Mosque (the Blue Mosque) and the converted Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque — re-opened for Islamic worship in 2020 — draw worshippers and visitors from around the world. The Süleymaniye Mosque, commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, remains one of the largest and most architecturally celebrated Ottoman mosques. Friday Jumu'ah prayers at Istanbul's historic mosques are attended by thousands, making the midday Adhan on Fridays a particularly powerful civic and spiritual moment for the city.
