Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates, with a population of roughly 3.5 million — of whom approximately 90% are expatriates from across the Muslim world and beyond. While non-Muslims form a significant part of the workforce, Islam is the UAE's official religion, and Islamic practice visibly shapes public life: prayer rooms are mandated in all major commercial buildings, alcohol is restricted to licensed venues, and the call to prayer is broadcast from thousands of mosques five times a day.

The UAE uses the Umm al-Qura calculation method — the same standard applied across Saudi Arabia and much of the Gulf. Dubai's latitude of 25.2°N produces moderate seasonal variation: Fajr ranges from about 4:15 AM in summer to 5:50 AM in winter, while Isha falls between 7:30 PM and 8:45 PM. The UAE government publishes official prayer timetables monthly through the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf), and mosques are required to adhere to these official times.

The Jumeirah Mosque, one of the few mosques in Dubai open to non-Muslim visitors, is a masterpiece of Fatimid architectural style and a symbol of Dubai's approach to cultural openness. The Grand Mosque (Masjid Muhammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum) in Bur Dubai, with a minaret over 70 metres tall, is one of the city's oldest Islamic landmarks. During Ramadan, Dubai enforces stricter public conduct rules, and the citywide Iftar gatherings — from five-star hotel buffets to community tents in older neighbourhoods — are a defining feature of the holy month.
