About Prayer Times in Damascus

Damascus, the capital of Syria, is widely considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth and holds a place of deep significance in Islamic history. It served as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate (661–750 CE), the first great Islamic empire, and its old city contains some of the earliest surviving Islamic monuments in the world. Today, Damascus has a population of approximately two to three million, the vast majority of whom are Sunni Muslim.

Syria's prayer times are calculated by the Ministry of Awqaf using a method derived from the Egyptian EGAS standard. At 33.5°N, Damascus experiences seasonal prayer-time shifts similar to Beirut and Amman — Fajr varies from roughly 3:20 AM in summer to 6:00 AM in winter, while Isha falls between 9:25 PM (summer) and 6:45 PM (winter). The Adhan from the Umayyad Mosque's minarets has called the faithful to prayer in Damascus for over 1,300 years.

The Umayyad Mosque (also called the Great Mosque of Damascus), built in 705 CE on the site of a Byzantine cathedral, is one of the oldest and most magnificent mosques in the Islamic world. It contains what tradition holds to be the shrine of John the Baptist (Prophet Yahya) and draws Muslim pilgrims from across the globe. The nearby Sayyida Ruqayya Mosque and the shrine of Sayyida Zaynab in the southern suburbs are major Shia pilgrimage destinations. The historic Souq al-Hamidiyya bazaar leads directly to the Great Mosque, making prayer and commerce intertwined in the old city's daily life.
