Dakar is the capital of Senegal, a West African country where approximately 95% of the population is Muslim — predominantly Sunni of the Maliki school, with a very strong Sufi tradition. Senegal is internationally renowned for the spiritual and social influence of its Sufi brotherhoods, particularly the Mouridiyya (founded by Sheikh Amadou Bamba in the 1880s) and the Tijaniyya. These orders permeate everyday life in Dakar, and their annual pilgrimages draw millions of followers.

At 14.7°N, Dakar is far enough from the equator to experience some seasonal variation but not dramatically so — Fajr ranges from roughly 5:20 AM in summer to 6:30 AM in winter, and Maghrib from 6:45 PM (summer) to 6:30 PM (winter). The Grand Mosque of Dakar, completed in 1964 with support from Morocco, is the city's most prominent mosque and stands near the Presidential Palace in the Plateau district. The nearby town of Touba — the holy city of the Mouridiyya brotherhood — is home to the Great Mosque of Touba, one of the largest mosques in Africa, and hosts the annual Magal pilgrimage that draws over three million people. Dakar's Islamic character is visible in its neighbourhood mosques, the prevalence of Arabic-language Islamic schools (daara), and the talibé (Quran students) who are a familiar presence on the city's streets.
