About Prayer Times in Casablanca

Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and its economic powerhouse, home to approximately four million people in the city proper and over six million in the greater metropolitan area. Morocco is an overwhelmingly Muslim country — over 99% of Moroccans identify as Sunni Muslim of the Maliki school — and Casablanca, despite its modern commercial character, is deeply rooted in Islamic identity. The city's name derives from the Portuguese Casa Branca ("White House"), but its Arabic name, al-Dar al-Bayda', carries the same meaning.

Morocco's prayer times are calculated by the Ministry of Habous and Islamic Affairs using the Rabita al-'Alam al-Islami (Muslim World League) method, with Fajr at 18°. At 33.6°N, Casablanca's prayer times shift meaningfully through the year — Fajr ranges from roughly 3:50 AM in summer to 7:10 AM in winter (Morocco observes year-round daylight saving since 2018, pushing all times one hour later than solar). Maghrib — which begins the Iftar fast during Ramadan — is announced via national radio and television, a tradition Moroccans across the world tune into during the holy month.

The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, completed in 1993, is the largest mosque in Africa and the seventh largest in the world, with a minaret standing 210 metres — the tallest in the world. It was built on a promontory over the Atlantic Ocean, so worshippers pray literally above the sea. Accommodating 105,000 worshippers inside and in its esplanade, it is Casablanca's defining landmark and a pilgrimage destination in its own right. The mosque's glass floor panels allow worshippers to see the ocean below during prayer.
