About Prayer Times in Beirut

Beirut, Lebanon's capital and largest city, is home to a population of roughly two million in the greater metropolitan area. Lebanon's Muslim population is approximately 61% of the country — divided between Sunni and Shia communities of roughly comparable size, alongside Alawite and Ismaili minorities. Beirut's unique constitutional system apportions political power across its Muslim and Christian communities, making it one of the most religiously plural cities in the Arab world.

Lebanon does not have a unified national calculation authority for prayer times; the Dar al-Fatwa (the Sunni religious authority) and the Higher Shia Islamic Council each publish separate timetables for their communities. Both typically follow methods close to the Egyptian EGAS standard or the Umm al-Qura method. At 33.9°N, Beirut's prayer times show significant seasonal variation — Fajr ranges from about 3:30 AM in summer to 6:05 AM in winter, and Isha from 9:20 PM (summer) to 6:50 PM (winter).

The Muhammad al-Amin Mosque, inaugurated in 2008 in the downtown area adjacent to Martyrs' Square, is Beirut's most prominent modern mosque — a grand Ottoman-influenced structure with four minarets that dominates the central district. The historic al-Omari Mosque in the old city, converted from a Crusader-era church, is one of Beirut's oldest Islamic sites. The Imam Ali Mosque in the southern suburbs serves the city's large Shia community. Beirut's culturally mixed character means the Adhan from a mosque and church bells may ring within moments of each other in the same neighbourhood.
