About Prayer Times in Baghdad

Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, was once the greatest city of the Islamic world. As the seat of the Abbasid Caliphate from 762 to 1258 CE, it was the political, intellectual, and cultural capital of a civilisation that stretched from Spain to Central Asia. The House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikmah) flourished here, translating Greek and Persian knowledge into Arabic and advancing mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and philosophy. Today, Baghdad is home to approximately 8–9 million people, predominantly Shia Muslim with a significant Sunni Muslim minority.

Iraq's official prayer times follow the Umm al-Qura method for Sunni observance, while the Shia community uses times issued by the Office of the Supreme Religious Authority (Marji'iya) in Najaf, which applies a slightly different calculation for Fajr and Isha. At 33.3°N, Baghdad experiences considerable seasonal variation: Fajr ranges from roughly 3:20 AM in June to 6:00 AM in December. The call to prayer from Baghdad's minarets — both the distinctive Shia-style Adhan and the Sunni version — marks the city's complex religious geography.

The Imam Musa al-Kadhim Shrine (Kadhimiya Mosque) in northwestern Baghdad, with its stunning gold-leafed domes and minarets, is one of the most visited Shia shrines in the world and a focal point of daily prayer for millions. The Abu Hanifa Mosque in Adhamiya, containing the tomb of the founder of the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, is the most important Sunni site in Baghdad. During Muharram, Shia commemorations of Ashura fill Baghdad's streets with processions and communal prayers that draw hundreds of thousands.
