Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia, a country with one of the most ancient connections to Islam in the world. Ethiopia was the destination of the first Hijra (migration) in Islamic history — the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sent his early followers to seek refuge with the Christian king (Negus) of Abyssinia in 615 CE, making Ethiopia a place revered in Islamic tradition. Today, approximately 35–40% of Ethiopia's 120 million people are Muslim, with a significant concentration in Addis Ababa and the surrounding Oromia region.

Ethiopian Muslims use the Muslim World League calculation method (Fajr at 18°). At 9°N latitude, Addis Ababa sits close to the equator but at a high altitude of 2,355 metres — this elevation does not affect the astronomical calculation of prayer times, which remain remarkably stable throughout the year. Fajr falls between approximately 5:15 and 5:35 AM, and Maghrib between 6:00 and 6:40 PM, varying by only about 30 minutes across all seasons.

The Anwar Mosque in the Merkato district — Africa's largest open-air market — is one of Addis Ababa's most significant mosques, serving the large Muslim trading community of the Merkato. The nearby town of Harar (in eastern Ethiopia), with its ancient walled city and 82 mosques in a tiny area, is considered the fourth holiest city in Islam by some scholars and remains a major centre of Islamic culture. Addis Ababa's Muslim community celebrates Eid prominently, and large open-air prayers are held at designated grounds across the city.
