About Prayer Times in Abuja

Abuja became Nigeria's federal capital in 1991, replacing Lagos as the seat of government. The city was purpose-built on a central location to represent all of Nigeria's diverse ethnic and religious communities. Abuja's population of approximately 3.5 million is religiously mixed, reflecting Nigeria's roughly equal division between Muslims (predominantly in the north) and Christians (predominantly in the south). The Federal Capital Territory's official policy of religious balance is visible in the city's infrastructure — the National Mosque and the National Christian Centre stand in proximity near the city centre.

Nigerian Muslims in Abuja follow the Muslim World League method for prayer times (Fajr at 18°). At 9.1°N, Abuja's equatorial latitude produces very stable prayer times year-round — Fajr consistently falls between 5:15 and 5:45 AM, and Maghrib between 6:25 and 6:55 PM, with little seasonal variation. The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), headquartered in Abuja, coordinates Islamic affairs nationally and oversees moon-sighting decisions for Ramadan and Eid.

The Nigerian National Mosque, completed in 1984 and expanded several times since, is the most prominent mosque in the capital, with a gleaming dome and four minarets visible from across the central district. It hosts Friday Jumu'ah prayers attended by federal officials and thousands of residents. Abuja also has a significant presence of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and various Sufi orders, reflecting the diversity of Nigerian Muslim practice. During Ramadan, Abuja's Muslim community organises communal Iftar events that bring together citizens from across Nigeria's many ethnic groups.
