About Prayer Times in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the seat of the federal government. With a population of approximately 1.5 million, it is a planned modern city shaped by oil wealth and shaped by Emirati Islamic identity. While expatriates form the majority of the population, Abu Dhabi's public culture is firmly grounded in Islamic practice — the call to prayer is broadcast from mosques across the city, Friday Jumu'ah is a public holiday, and Islamic values inform the UAE's legal and social framework.
The UAE uses the Umm al-Qura calculation method for official prayer times. At 24.5°N latitude, Abu Dhabi's prayer schedule is very similar to Dubai's — Fajr ranges from about 4:20 AM (summer) to 5:50 AM (winter), and Maghrib falls between 5:45 PM and 7:15 PM. The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (Awqaf) publishes official monthly timetables distributed to all mosques in the emirate.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, completed in 2007 and named after the UAE's founding father, is one of the largest mosques in the world, accommodating over 40,000 worshippers at full capacity. Its 82 white marble domes, four 107-metre minarets, and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet make it both a place of worship and a global architectural landmark. The mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times and draws millions of visitors annually. The Khalifa Mosque, the Al-Mushrif Mosque, and hundreds of neighbourhood mosques serve Abu Dhabi's daily worshipping community.
