Is Pork Haram?
Why is pork prohibited in Islam and is any part of the pig permissible?
Islamic Ruling
Why is pork prohibited? The Quran declares it impure (rijs). Scholars note it may carry health risks (historically, trichinosis etc.), it is a command from Allah that a Muslim follows out of obedience even without a full rationale.
Are any pig derivatives permissible? The vast majority of scholars say no. All pig products — lard, pork gelatin, pork enzymes in cheese — are prohibited. Some Hanafi scholars permit pork-derived substances that have undergone complete istihalah (total transformation), but this view is a minority position.
Emergency exception: If a person faces starvation with no other food available, consuming the minimum necessary to survive is temporarily permitted under the rule of darura (necessity).
