Is Pork Haram?

Why is pork prohibited in Islam and is any part of the pig permissible?

Islamic Ruling

Pork is haram by explicit Quranic text — one of the clearest dietary prohibitions in Islam. All parts of the pig, including its fat, gelatin, and derivatives, are prohibited.

Why is pork prohibited? The Quran declares it impure (rijs). Scholars note it may carry health risks (historically, trichinosis etc.), it is a command from Allah that a Muslim follows out of obedience even without a full rationale.

Are any pig derivatives permissible? The vast majority of scholars say no. All pig products — lard, pork gelatin, pork enzymes in cheese — are prohibited. Some Hanafi scholars permit pork-derived substances that have undergone complete istihalah (total transformation), but this view is a minority position.

Emergency exception: If a person faces starvation with no other food available, consuming the minimum necessary to survive is temporarily permitted under the rule of darura (necessity).

Quranic Evidence

  • Quran 2:173

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him.

  • Quran 5:3

Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine...

Hadith Evidence

  • Sahih al-Bukhari 2121

"The Prophet ﷺ said: "Allah and His Messenger have prohibited the sale of alcohol, dead animals, pigs and idols.""
