Is Non-Zabiha / Non-Halal-Slaughtered Meat Halal?

Can Muslims eat meat that is not slaughtered according to Islamic (zabiha) requirements?

Islamic Ruling

This is a significant contemporary issue for Muslims living in non-Muslim majority countries.

The requirement: For meat to be halal, the animal must be slaughtered by a Muslim, Christian, or Jew (Ahl al-Kitab — People of the Book), with the name of Allah mentioned, and the blood fully drained.

The debate: Can meat slaughtered by Christians/Jews (without mentioning Allah but by a believing monotheist) be eaten? The majority position among madhabs is that the meat of People of the Book is permissible based on Quran 5:5. However, conditions apply regarding stunning, the mention of other names at slaughter, and whether the slaughterer is actually practicing their faith.

Machine slaughter: A major contemporary debate. Majority of contemporary fatwas in Western countries conditionally permit machine-slaughtered chicken if a Muslim pronounces Bismillah over the process. ISNA, IFANCA, and HFA certifications navigate this differently.

Practical guidance: The cautious position is to consume only zabiha-certified halal meat. The permissive position allows meat of practicing Christians and Jews when zabiha is unavailable.

Quranic Evidence

  • Quran 5:5

This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them.

  • Quran 2:173

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah.

Hadith Evidence

  • Sahih al-Bukhari 5507

"A woman brought a sheep to the Prophet ﷺ as a gift and it was eaten. This indicated accepting food from People of the Book."

Views of the Four Madhabs

Hanafi

Meat of People of the Book is permissible. Machine slaughter: conditionally permissible with Bismillah.

Maliki

Meat of People of the Book permissible. Strictness varies on whether the slaughterer is a practicing believer.

Shafi'i

Permissible from People of the Book if slaughtered properly; requires the name of Allah not to be deliberately omitted.

Hanbali

Similar to Shafi'i; caution on modern commercial slaughter.

Scholar's View

Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi permitted eating from People of the Book in the West when zabiha is unavailable, citing Quran 5:5.
