About Prayer Times in Zurich
Zurich, Switzerland's largest city and its financial centre, has a Muslim population of approximately 50,000–60,000 — around 8% of the city's 430,000 residents — with Switzerland's national Muslim population estimated at 450,000 (about 5%). Swiss Muslims are predominantly of Balkan (Kosovar, Albanian, Bosnian) and Turkish origin, alongside smaller Arab and South Asian communities. Islam is the third-largest religion in Switzerland, and Zurich is home to the country's main Islamic institutional organisations.
Swiss mosques primarily use the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°), with timetables published by the Coordination of Islamic Organisations in Switzerland (KIOS). At 47.4°N, Zurich's prayer times vary moderately — Fajr ranges from approximately 3:10 AM in June to 6:40 AM in December, and Isha from 10:40 PM (summer) to 5:20 PM (winter). Switzerland's 2009 referendum banning the construction of new minarets — passed with 57% of the vote — has meant that new mosques in Zurich are built without minarets, fundamentally shaping the visual landscape of Islamic worship in the city.
The An-Nur Mosque in Zurich's Saatlen district serves the city's largest Muslim congregation. The Islamic Centre Zurich (IZZ) in Wiedikon and the Albanian Mosque in Altstetten serve the Albanian and Kosovar community — one of Zurich's most prominent Muslim groups. Switzerland does not have a state-recognised Islamic authority, meaning mosques operate as private associations. The University of Zurich offers one of Europe's leading academic programmes in Islamic studies, contributing to scholarly understanding of Muslim communities in the Swiss and European context.
