About Prayer Times in Manchester

Manchester, in northwest England, has a Muslim population of approximately 100,000 — around 15% of the city's population — making it one of England's most significant Muslim communities outside London. The community is predominantly of South Asian heritage (Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Indian), with the Rusholme, Longsight, and Cheetham Hill neighbourhoods forming the historic core of Islamic community life. Manchester's Muslim community is known for its civic engagement, with Muslim representation in local government, business, and sport growing significantly in recent decades.

Manchester mosques principally use the Muslim World League method (Fajr and Isha at 18°). At 53.5°N, Manchester is slightly north of Birmingham and faces even more extreme seasonal prayer-time variation — in June, Fajr occurs before 2:30 AM, and Isha technically does not end in some calculation methods, requiring the midnight or one-seventh-of-night rules used by many local scholars. In December, Fajr falls around 6:20 AM and Maghrib as early as 3:45 PM, compressing the daytime prayer window to just over nine hours.

The Manchester Central Mosque on Upper Park Road serves one of the largest Muslim congregations in the North of England. The Didsbury Mosque (the former Albert Park Methodist Church, converted in 1967 — one of the first mosque conversions in the UK) and the Manchester Islamic Centre in Longsight are key community hubs. Manchester is also home to the Islamic Foundation of Ireland's north of England offices and several major Islamic schools. The city's Friday prayers draw thousands across its dense network of over 60 mosques and prayer facilities.
