About Prayer Times in Vienna

Vienna, the capital of Austria, is home to approximately 200,000 Muslims — around 12% of its 1.9 million residents — with Austria's total Muslim population estimated at 700,000, or roughly 8% of the national population. Austria has a distinctive history with Islam: it was the first Western European country to formally recognise Islam as a legal religion under state law — in 1912, following the annexation of Bosnia — and the Islam Act governing Muslim religious life in Austria traces its origins to that recognition, making Austrian Muslims one of the most institutionally established Muslim communities in Europe.

Austrian mosques follow timetables issued by the Islamic Faith Community in Austria (IGGÖ), which uses the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°). At 48.2°N, Vienna's prayer schedule shows considerable seasonal variation — Fajr ranges from approximately 2:55 AM in June to 6:45 AM in December, and Isha from 11:00 PM (summer) to 5:15 PM (winter). The IGGÖ is legally recognised under Austrian state law as the representative body of Muslims, giving it a unique formal status compared to most European Muslim organisations.

The Vienna Islamic Centre (Islamisches Zentrum Wien), completed in 1979 with Saudi funding, is the main mosque of the Austrian capital, with a large dome and 33-metre minaret on the Danube Canal — a striking landmark visible from the city's ring road. The centre houses a mosque accommodating 1,500 worshippers, a library, and the IGGÖ's administrative offices. Vienna's Floridsdorf Mosque and the Turkish-community ATIB Mosque also serve major congregations. Vienna hosts a number of important Islamic academic and dialogue institutions, reflecting Austria's long-standing formal recognition of Islam.
