About Prayer Times in Tashkent

Tashkent is the capital and largest city of Uzbekistan, with a population of approximately 2.5 million. Uzbekistan is one of the cradles of Islamic civilisation — the medieval cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, within a few hours of Tashkent, were among the greatest centres of Islamic learning, science, and architecture in the world from the 8th to 15th centuries. Today, approximately 88% of Uzbekistan's 35 million people are Muslim (predominantly Sunni Hanafi), though decades of Soviet rule significantly disrupted formal religious practice.

Uzbekistan's prayer times are administered by the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan (Muftiyat), which publishes timetables using the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°). At 41.3°N, Tashkent experiences strong seasonal variation — Fajr ranges from approximately 2:55 AM in June (very short summer nights) to 6:40 AM in December, and Isha from 11:30 PM (summer) to 6:50 PM (winter). In midsummer, the short window between Isha and Fajr — less than three hours — is a practical challenge that the Muftiyat addresses with guidance to congregations.

The Khast Imam Mosque and Complex (Hazrati Imam) in Tashkent is Uzbekistan's spiritual centre, housing one of the most precious Islamic manuscripts in the world — the Uthman Quran, believed to be one of the oldest Quranic manuscripts in existence, dating to the 7th century CE. The complex includes a mosque, madrasa, and library. The Tillya Shaykh Mosque adjacent to it is the city's main Friday congregation mosque. Since Uzbekistan's independence in 1991, Islamic practice has revived significantly, with mosques rebuilt and religious education expanded across the country.
