About Prayer Times in Sarajevo
Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, holds a unique place in European Islamic history as the continent's most visibly Muslim-majority capital city. Approximately 80% of Sarajevo's 275,000 residents identify as Bosniak Muslims — Sunni of the Hanafi school — whose Islamic tradition dates to Ottoman rule beginning in 1463. The city's centuries of coexistence between Muslims, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, and Jews earned it the nickname "the Jerusalem of Europe," though the 1992–1995 siege during the Bosnian War — in which the city endured the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare — left deep scars that the community is still healing.
Bosnia's prayer times are published by the Islamic Community of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Islamska zajednica), using the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°). At 43.9°N, Sarajevo's prayer times shift considerably — Fajr ranges from approximately 3:10 AM in June to 6:10 AM in December, and Isha from 11:00 PM (summer) to 5:45 PM (winter). The Islamic Community is one of the oldest formally organised Muslim institutions in Europe, tracing its continuous existence to the Ottoman millet system, and it oversees mosques, madrasas, and Islamic affairs across the country.
The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque in the Baščaršija bazaar quarter — completed in 1532 and the largest historical mosque in Bosnia — is Sarajevo's spiritual heart and one of the finest examples of Ottoman Islamic architecture in the Balkans. Its sebilj fountain, courtyard, and clock tower form one of the most photographed corners in the city. The Emperor's Mosque (Careva džamija), the oldest in Sarajevo (1457), and the Ali Pasha's Mosque are among the city's hundred-plus mosques. Sarajevo's Ramadan — known locally as ramazan — is celebrated with intense community spirit: the Baščaršija comes alive after Iftar each evening, and the sound of the Adhan echoing from multiple minarets across the valley is one of the most distinctive experiences in the Balkans.
