About Prayer Times in Rome
Rome, Italy's capital and its largest city, has a Muslim population of approximately 150,000 — around 5–6% of the city's 2.8 million residents — and Italy's national Muslim population is estimated at 2.6 million. The Italian Muslim community is predominantly of Moroccan, Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Senegalese, Pakistani, and Albanian origin. Rome's Muslim community is relatively young compared to those in France, Germany, or the UK — large-scale Muslim immigration to Italy accelerated only in the 1980s and 1990s — but it has grown rapidly and established institutions across the city.
Italian mosques primarily use the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°), with coordination from the Union of Islamic Communities and Organisations in Italy (UCOII). At 41.9°N, Rome's prayer schedule varies moderately — Fajr ranges from approximately 3:40 AM in June to 6:50 AM in December, and Isha from 10:50 PM (summer) to 5:55 PM (winter). Italy does not formally recognise Islam as a religion under state law (unlike Catholicism, Judaism, or Protestantism), which means mosques operate without the same legal status or public funding as other faith communities.
The Islamic Cultural Centre of Italy and Rome Mosque in Parioli, completed in 1995, was at the time the largest mosque in the Western world, with a distinctive copper-domed prayer hall, 12 columns rising to 39 metres, and gardens accommodating thousands. It was funded by Saudi Arabia and designed by the Italian architect Paolo Portoghesi in collaboration with the Muslim architect Sami Mousawi. The mosque serves Rome's Muslim community and hosts diplomatic and interfaith events. The Imam Ali Mosque in Centocelle and community prayer halls across the Esquilino neighbourhood (Rome's most ethnically diverse market district) serve daily worshippers across the city.
