About Prayer Times in Oslo

Oslo, the capital of Norway, has a Muslim population of approximately 120,000 — around 18% of the city's 700,000 residents — and Norway's total Muslim population is estimated at 250,000–300,000. The community is diverse, with Pakistani-Norwegians forming the oldest and largest single group, alongside Somali, Iraqi, Moroccan, and more recently Syrian communities. Islam is the second-largest religion in Norway, and Oslo is the centre of Norwegian Islamic institutional life.

Oslo's mosques use the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°), with seasonal adjustments coordinated by the Islamic Council Norway (IRN). At 59.9°N — one of the northernmost significant Muslim communities in the world — Oslo faces the most extreme prayer-time challenges of any European capital. In June, the sun barely sets: astronomical twilight persists through the entire night, and both Fajr and Isha require fixed-time estimations. Ramadan fasting in summer can theoretically exceed 20 hours, though scholars typically follow the Mecca or nearest-country-with-normal-night approach to set reasonable Isha and Fajr times. In December, Maghrib falls before 3:30 PM.

The Islamic Cultural Centre (Rabita mosque) and the Central Jamaat-e Ahl-e-Sunnat mosque (the largest mosque in Norway by attendance, serving the Pakistani community) in Grønland are Oslo's most prominent Islamic institutions. Grønland, sometimes called "little Karachi," is Oslo's most ethnically diverse neighbourhood and the hub of Muslim community life, with halal butchers, Islamic bookshops, and restaurants lining its streets. Norway's government provides financial support to religious communities based on membership, making Norwegian mosques among the best-resourced in Europe relative to their size.
