About Prayer Times in Mumbai
Mumbai is India's commercial capital and the country's most populous city, with a metropolitan population exceeding 20 million. Its Muslim population of approximately 2–2.5 million — around 20% of the city — is one of the largest Muslim urban communities in India. Mumbai's Muslims are ethnically and theologically diverse: Sunni Muslims of the Hanafi school are the majority, alongside significant Shia, Ismaili (Bohra and Khoja), and Dawoodi Bohra communities, reflecting the city's long history as a port where Indian Ocean trade brought different Muslim traditions together.
Mumbai's Muslim community uses the Muslim World League or University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi method (Fajr at 18°), with timetables published by local mosque committees. At 19.1°N, Mumbai's low latitude gives it relatively stable prayer times — Fajr ranges from approximately 4:45 AM in summer to 6:00 AM in winter, and Maghrib from 6:00 PM (winter) to 7:25 PM (summer). The city's pace rarely slows for prayer, but mosques throughout the crowded neighbourhoods of Mohammed Ali Road, Bhendi Bazaar, and Dharavi are filled at every prayer time.
The Haji Ali Dargah, an islet mosque and shrine off the Worli coast accessible only at low tide, is Mumbai's most iconic Islamic site — a 15th-century Sufi shrine visited by millions of Muslims and non-Muslims alike each year. The Minara Masjid near Crawford Market, the Jama Masjid in the Fort area, and the grand Sunni and Dawoodi Bohra mosques of Mohammed Ali Road are among the city's most active prayer centres. Mumbai's Dawoodi Bohra community, a Shia Ismaili sect led by the Syedna, has an internationally recognised presence and maintains its own distinctive mosque architecture across the city.
