Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh — India's most populous state — was the seat of the Nawabs of Awadh (Oudh) in the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming one of the great centres of Islamic civilisation in South Asia. The city is particularly renowned for its Shia Muslim culture: Awadh's rulers were Shia, and Lucknow developed a distinctive Shia scholarly tradition, architecture, and cultural etiquette (tahzeeb) that remain defining features today. The city's Muslim population is approximately 26% of 3.5 million — around 900,000 people.

Lucknow's Muslim community uses the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°). At 26.8°N, prayer times show moderate seasonal variation — Fajr ranges from roughly 3:45 AM in June to 6:00 AM in December, and Isha from 10:00 PM (summer) to 7:00 PM (winter).
