Chittagong (officially Chattogram) is Bangladesh's second-largest city and its main seaport, with a population of approximately 4.5 million. Islam arrived in Chittagong early — Arab and Persian traders established Muslim communities here as far back as the 9th century, and the city's connection to the sea trade routes of the Indian Ocean has always given it a cosmopolitan Islamic character. Today, Chittagong is approximately 90% Muslim, predominantly Sunni Hanafi, with a Sufi tradition particularly associated with the revered shrine of Bayazid Bostami.

Bangladesh's prayer times are published by the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh using an astronomical method with Fajr at 19° solar depression. At 22.4°N, Chittagong's prayer times are very similar to Dhaka — Fajr ranges from approximately 4:05 AM in summer to 5:30 AM in winter, and Maghrib from 5:20 PM to 6:40 PM. Chittagong's port culture means its mosques often accommodate sailors and traders from across the Muslim world, particularly from Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

The Bayazid Bostami Shrine in the Nasirabad area, attributed to the 9th-century Persian Sufi saint Bayazid Bostami (though this attribution is debated by historians), is one of the most visited Islamic sites in Bangladesh, drawing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually. The Anderkilla Shahi Jame Mosque, built by the Mughal governor Shaista Khan in 1667, is one of Chittagong's most historic mosques. The city also has a significant Shia community, and Muharram commemorations are visibly observed in several neighbourhoods.
