About Prayer Times in Baku

Baku is the capital of Azerbaijan, a Caucasian nation with a Muslim majority of approximately 97% — of whom around 65% are Shia and 35% are Sunni, making Azerbaijan the only majority Shia country outside of Iran and Iraq. Despite this, religious observance in Baku is moderate by Middle Eastern standards, influenced by nearly 70 years of Soviet atheist policy. A revival of Islamic practice has been ongoing since independence in 1991, though the government maintains a strictly secular constitutional framework.

Azerbaijan's prayer times are administered by the Caucasus Muslim Board (Şeyx'ül-İslam), which oversees both Shia and Sunni religious affairs. The board publishes unified prayer timetables for the country using an astronomical method calibrated to local conditions. At 40.4°N, Baku's prayer schedule shows considerable seasonal variation — Fajr ranges from about 3:15 AM in June to 6:40 AM in December, and Isha from 11:15 PM (summer) to 6:35 PM (winter). The Caucasus Muslim Board provides guidance on the abbreviated summer prayer windows.

The Heydar Mosque (Bibi-Heybat Mosque complex), rebuilt in the 1990s on the site of a medieval mosque destroyed by Soviet authorities, is Baku's most important Shia mosque, housing a shrine associated with a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Juma Mosque in the old city (İçərişəhər, a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the recently constructed Heydar Aliyev Mosque are among Baku's most visited. During Muharram, Baku's Shia community holds Ashura observances that draw tens of thousands, making the day one of the most visible expressions of Islamic identity in this otherwise largely secular city.
