About Prayer Times in Amsterdam

Amsterdam, the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, has a Muslim population of approximately 100,000 — around 12% of its 870,000 residents — making it the Dutch city with the highest proportion of Muslims outside Rotterdam. The community is predominantly of Moroccan and Turkish origin, shaped by postwar guest worker migration, with more recent arrivals from Iraq, Somalia, and Afghanistan. Neighbourhoods such as the Bijlmer (Amsterdam Southeast), Slotervaart, and Bos en Lommer have large Muslim populations and established mosque communities.

Dutch mosques primarily use the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°) or, for Turkish community mosques, the Diyanet timetables. Amsterdam's latitude of 52.4°N produces prayer-time patterns almost identical to London and Berlin — Fajr before 2:45 AM in June, Isha approaching midnight in summer, and Maghrib before 4:00 PM in December. The Contact Orgaan Moslims en Overheid (CMO) coordinates between Dutch Muslim communities and the government, including guidance on prayer scheduling and Ramadan moon-sighting.

The Mevlana Mosque in Slotervaart, one of Amsterdam's largest mosques, and the El Tawheed Mosque in Amsterdam-West are prominent community mosques serving the city's Moroccan and Turkish populations respectively. The World Islamic Mission Mosque on Poeldijkstraat serves the South Asian community. Amsterdam is also home to the Anne Frank House, where the Jewish teenager hid from Nazi persecution — a site of historical reflection for Amsterdam's diverse communities, including its growing Muslim population. During Ramadan, community Iftar gatherings at major mosques are attended by hundreds of families from across the metropolitan area.
