About Prayer Times in Almaty
Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan and its former capital, home to approximately 2.1 million people. Kazakhstan is a majority Muslim country — approximately 70% of its 19 million people identify as Muslim, predominantly Sunni Hanafi — though religious practice was severely suppressed during the Soviet era and is only now reviving. Almaty's Muslim community reflects this complex inheritance: Islamic identity is important culturally, but observance varies widely from devout practice to largely nominal identification.
Kazakhstan's prayer times are published by the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kazakhstan (SAMK / Muftiyat) using the Muslim World League method (Fajr at 18°). At 43.3°N, Almaty experiences very strong seasonal variation in prayer times — one of the most dramatic among major Muslim cities. In June, Fajr begins around 2:50 AM and Isha ends after 11:45 PM, with only about three hours of true night. In December, Fajr falls around 7:10 AM and Maghrib near 4:35 PM. The SAMK provides guidance on how to observe prayers during the challenging summer months.
The Central Mosque of Almaty, completed in 1999, is the city's most prominent mosque, with a turquoise dome and tall minarets visible across the skyline against the backdrop of the Tian Shan mountains. The older Khazrat Sultan Mosque (Grand Mosque) in nearby Nur-Sultan (the current capital) is even larger. Almaty's post-Soviet Islamic revival has included the construction of dozens of new mosques, the reopening of Islamic schools, and the return of pilgrimage to Mecca — Kazakhstan is now among the top ten countries by number of annual Hajj pilgrims.
