Is Wearing Gold Haram for Men?

Is it haram for Muslim men to wear gold jewellery?

Islamic Ruling

Wearing gold is haram for men by consensus of all four madhabs, based on explicit prohibition from the Prophet ﷺ.

Evidence: The Prophet ﷺ took a piece of gold in one hand and silk in the other and said: "These two are forbidden (haram) for the males of my Ummah."

What counts as gold: Gold rings, gold chains, gold watches, and any gold jewellery worn by men are prohibited.

Exceptions: No exceptions exist — the prohibition is categorical. Even gold-plated items are disliked by many scholars.

White gold: Scholars differ. Some say white gold (a gold alloy) is still haram for men. Others say if it has no appearance of gold, it may be permissible. The cautious position avoids it.

Women: Gold is fully permissible for women.

Hadith Evidence

  • Sunan al-Nasa'i 5148

"The Prophet ﷺ said: "Gold and silk are lawful for the females of my Ummah but unlawful for the males.""

  • Sunan Abu Dawud 4057

"The Prophet ﷺ prohibited wearing gold rings for men."
