Tayammum (Arabic: التيمم) is the dry purification using clean earth — soil, sand, dust, or stone — that substitutes for both wudu and ghusl when water is unavailable or when using it would cause harm. It is one of the mercies and concessions Allah has granted this Ummah.

Allah says: "...and if you do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands with it." (Quran 5:6, also 4:43). The Prophet ﷺ said: "The earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a means of purification" (Sahih al-Bukhari 335).

When Tayammum Is Valid

Tayammum is permitted when:

  • No water is available within a reasonable distance, or the available water is needed for drinking.

  • Using water would cause or worsen illness, or dangerously delay recovery, confirmed by experience or trustworthy medical advice.

  • Water cannot be reached safely — for example, due to extreme cold without means to warm it, or a genuine threat in obtaining it.

  • Tayammum replaces wudu for minor impurity and ghusl for major impurity alike; the action is the same.

    What Breaks Tayammum

Tayammum is nullified by everything that nullifies wudu, plus the availability or ability to use water. The moment water becomes accessible (and usable), the concession ends and the person returns to wudu or ghusl for subsequent prayers.

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wiping to the elbows — unlike wudu, tayammum wipes the hands only to the wrists, not the elbows.

  • Using visibly impure earth — the surface must be clean (tahir). Pure dust on a wall or stone is acceptable.

  • Assuming any difficulty justifies it — mild inconvenience is not a valid excuse; there must be genuine absence of water or real harm in using it.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pray several prayers with one tayammum?

The majority view is that a fresh tayammum should be made for each obligatory prayer, since it is a concession tied to necessity. Follow reliable scholarship in your madhab.

What surfaces can I use indoors?

Clean dust on any natural surface — an unpainted stone wall, untreated earth, or a dusty surface — is acceptable. If a surface is entirely free of dust, it does not fulfil the requirement in the stricter opinions.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1

    Verify Tayammum is Valid

Ensure you have a valid reason: water is not available within a reasonable distance, or a medical condition prevents using water.
    2

    Make the Intention

Intend in your heart to perform tayammum as a substitute for wudu or ghusl.
    3

    Say Bismillah

    Begin with "Bismillah."
    4

    Strike Clean Earth Once

Strike both palms lightly on clean earth, dust, sand, or an unpainted stone wall — once.
    5

    Blow Off Excess Dust

Gently blow or shake off excess dust from your palms.
    6

    Wipe the Face

Wipe your entire face with both palms — once, as in wudu.
    7

Wipe the Hands to the Wrists

Wipe the back of the right hand with the left palm up to the wrist, then the back of the left hand with the right palm. This differs from wudu — only to the wrists, not elbows.

    Complete

Tayammum is complete. Pray as normal. It is invalidated by the same things that invalidate wudu, plus the availability of water.
