Istinja (Arabic: الاستنجاء) is the purification of the private parts after relieving oneself, using water. Istijmar is the use of dry solid material — originally smooth stones, today toilet paper — to remove impurity. Together they ensure the body is clean (tahir), which is a condition for valid wudu and prayer.
Allah praises a community for their cleanliness: "...In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves." (Quran 9:108). Neglecting proper istinja is serious: the Prophet ﷺ passed two graves and noted that one was being punished because the person did not protect himself from the splashes of his urine (Sahih al-Bukhari 216).
Islam dignifies even the most private moments with manners (adab al-khala). These include entering and leaving with the prescribed du'a, maintaining concealment, not facing or turning the back to the qiblah while outdoors, and using the left hand for cleaning. This etiquette protects both physical purity and modesty.
The Sunnah is often to combine the two: first remove the bulk of impurity with dry material (istijmar — a minimum of three wipes that leave the area clean), then complete with water (istinja) until no trace or odour remains. Water alone is sufficient and is the more thorough purification; dry material alone is permitted when water is unavailable.
Using the right hand — cleaning the private parts is done with the left hand; the Prophet ﷺ forbade using the right hand for this.
Fewer than three wipes with dry material, or stopping before the area is genuinely clean.
Carrying anything with Allah's name into the toilet without good reason (e.g. a phone showing Quran), out of reverence.
Splashing and carelessness with urine — the gravest mistake, given the Prophet's explicit warning.
If it removes all visible impurity in at least three wipes and leaves the area clean, it is valid (istijmar). However, completing with water (istinja) is superior and recommended whenever water is available.
On entering: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal khubuthi wal khaba'ith." On leaving: "Ghufranaka" (I seek Your forgiveness) — the Prophet's practice (Sunan Abi Dawud 30).

Introduction to the Quran
Allah praises a community for their cleanliness: "...In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves." (Quran 9:108). Neglecting proper istinja is serious: the Prophet ﷺ passed two graves and noted that one was being punished because the person did not protect himself from the splashes of his urine (Sahih al-Bukhari 216).
Why Bathroom Etiquette (Adab) Matters
Islam dignifies even the most private moments with manners (adab al-khala). These include entering and leaving with the prescribed du'a, maintaining concealment, not facing or turning the back to the qiblah while outdoors, and using the left hand for cleaning. This etiquette protects both physical purity and modesty.
Istijmar and Istinja Together
The Sunnah is often to combine the two: first remove the bulk of impurity with dry material (istijmar — a minimum of three wipes that leave the area clean), then complete with water (istinja) until no trace or odour remains. Water alone is sufficient and is the more thorough purification; dry material alone is permitted when water is unavailable.

Step-by-Step Instructions
1
Enter with Left Foot, Say Du'a
Enter the bathroom with your left foot. Recite: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal khubuthi wal khabaith" (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from male and female evil).
2
Do Not Face or Turn Back on Qiblah
Avoid facing the qiblah (direction of Makkah) or turning your back to it while on the toilet, especially outdoors.
3
Use Toilet Paper First (Istijmar)
Use toilet paper or similar clean material to remove the bulk of the impurity. A minimum of 3 wipes is required in many madhab rulings.
4
Cleanse with Water (Istinja)
Use water (with the left hand) to clean the private parts until all impurity is removed. The area must be clean — no odour or visible trace of impurity remains.
5
Wash the Hands Thoroughly
Wash both hands thoroughly with soap or similar cleaning agent.
6
Exit with Right Foot, Say Du'a
Exit with the right foot and say: "Ghufranaka" (I seek Your forgiveness). The Prophet ﷺ used to say this upon leaving the bathroom.
